Cada año, Lit & Luz apoya la creación de nuevas obras colaborativas entre escritores, artistas visuales, artistas performáticos y músicos de Chicago y de México. Las piezas se presentarán en español e incluirán narración oral, música, poesía, animación e improvisación, explorando la relación entre lenguas, formas artísticas y problemáticas sociales, así como el encuentro cultural entre Estados Unidos y México, a través del tema “Repair/Reparar”. El programa de este año presenta el estreno en la Ciudad de México de cuatro performances en vivo del grupo de colaboración 2025-2026: Ana Hernández, Diana Garza Islas, Gabriela Damián Miravete, Magali Lara, Margarita Saona, Maria Gaspar, Stefania Gomez & TAITAI +/-/x/÷Tina. Con música de Jenny Beaujean.

El Live Magazine Show se presenta en colaboración con el Museo Universitario del Chopo y el Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago (MCA), con el apoyo de The Poetry Foundation y de otros patrocinadores.

Experience the Live Magazine Show, Lit & Luz’s signature celebration. Each year, Lit & Luz supports the creation of new collaborative artworks between writers, visual artists, and musicians from Chicago and Mexico. The pieces will be presented in Spanish and include storytelling, music, poetry, animation, and extemporaneous performances that explore the relationship between languages, art forms, social issues, and cultures of the United States and Mexico through the theme “Repair/Reparar". This year’s program debuts four live performances from the 2025-2026 Collaboration Cohort: Ana Hernández, Diana Garza Islas, Gabriela Damián Miravete, Magali Lara, Margarita Saona, Maria Gaspar, Stefania Gomez & TAITAI +/-/x/÷Tina. with music by Jenny Beaujean.

Una charla con la artista Maria Gaspar

Cada miércoles, SOMA abre sus puertas al público y ofrece un espacio para conversaciones, performances y presentaciones donde expertos de diversas disciplinas discuten sus prácticas. En esta ocasión, SOMA da la bienvenida a la artista mexicoamericana María Gaspar, quien visita la Ciudad de México como parte del grupo de artistas del Festival Lit & Luz. Este festival anual, único y bilingüe, convoca a artistas visuales, escritores y poetas de México y Chicago a participar durante una semana en eventos públicos y performances colaborativas en ambas ciudades. 

Durante este miércoles de SOMA, Gaspar presentará su práctica artística y proyectos colaborativos, enfocados en crear esculturas sonoras y performances a partir de desechos recuperados del penal cercano a la casa donde vivió en su  infancia. La artista compartirá las estrategias estéticas que le ayudan a abordar la inquietante presencia del término “detención”, creando tensiones entre la persistencia de la arquitectura carcelaria y la posibilidad de resistir la lógica que sustenta ese concepto.

Nacida en Chicago, Maria Gaspar es una artista interdisciplinaria de primera generación, cuyo trabajo se compromete con las políticas de la espacialidad a través de la instalación, la escultura, el sonido y la  performance. Su obra aborda la justicia espacial para amplificar, movilizar o desviar las estructuras de poder mediante gestos individuales y colectivos. Durante la última década, Gaspar ha sido reconocida por sus proyectos plurianuales que buscan desmantelar fronteras, trascender los problemas penales y transformar lugares de precariedad en espacios de posibilidad. Gaspar ha recibido el Premio Guggenheim de Artes Creativas, la Beca para Artistas Latinx, el Premio Frieze de Impacto y la Beca para Artistas de Estados Unidos, entre otros reconocimientos. Actualmente es profesora en la Escuela de las Artes del Instituto de Artes de Chicago.

Every Wednesday, SOMA opens its doors to the public and offers a space for conversations, performances, and presentations where experts from different disciplines discuss their practices. On this occasion, SOMA welcomes Chicago-based artist Maria Gaspar, who is visiting as a participant of the Lit & Luz Festival. This one-of-a-kind cross-cultural bilingual festival brings together writers, poets, and visual artists from Mexico and Chicago for a week-long series of public programming and collaborative performances once a year in both cities.

During this SOMA Wednesday, Gaspar will introduce the local audience to her artistic practice and several collaborative projects focused on creating sonic sculptures and performances from jail debris scavenged from her childhood neighborhood. The artist will discuss her artistic strategies that address the haunting presence of detention, creating a tension between the persistence of carceral architecture and the possibility of resisting the logic it sustains.

Born in Chicago, Maria Gaspar is a first-generation interdisciplinary artist who engages with the politics of location through installation, sculpture, sound, and performance. Gaspar’s body of work addresses spatial justice by amplifying, mobilizing, or diverting structures of power through individual and collective gestures. Over the past decade, Gaspar has been recognized for her multi-year projects that aim to dismantle borders, transcend penal matter, and transform places of precarity into sites of possibility. Gaspar has received the Guggenheim Award for Creative Arts, the Latinx Artist Fellowship, the Frieze Impact Prize, and the United States Artists Fellowship, among numerous other honors. She is a Professor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

In this Spanish language talk, Oaxacan artist and current Hyde Park Art Center’s Jackman Goldwasser Resident, Ana Hernández, will give a presentation on her latest exhibition Náa’ Reza [Broken Hand] currently on view at the Laboratorio Arte Alameda in Mexico City. 

The artworks featured in the exhibition include video, performance, installation and printmaking, and center around the tradition of the comixcal, a large-rounded clay pot used daily in the kitchens of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. Hernández will describe how she combines traditional techniques with contemporary expressions, questioning how we inhabit the land, to whom it belongs, what resources we extract from it, and how it affects us through what we eat. 

Following her presentation, Hernández will be joined by Mexico City-based curator and writer Esteban King Álvarez and Chicago-based researcher Andrea Reed-Leal for a conversation discussing the exhibition and the artist’s role in addressing contemporary issues around food sovereignty, our approach to technology, and the cultural relationships to food and the land in Mexico. A reception will follow, sponsored by the Consulate General of Mexico in Chicago.

Náa’ Reza [Mano rota]: Una conversación con Ana Hernández

En esta charla en español, la artista oaxaqueña y actual residente del programa Jackman Goldwasser del Hyde Park Art Center, Ana Hernández, hablará sobre su última exposición Náa’ Reza [Mano rota] actualmente expuesta en el Museo Laboratorio Arte Alameda en la Ciudad de México.

Las obras de arte que forman parte de la exposición incluyen videos, performance, instalación y grabado. Se centran en la tradición del comixcal, una olla de barro de gran tamaño que se usa a diario en las cocinas del Istmo de Tehuantepec. Hernández describirá cómo combina técnicas tradicionales con expresiones contemporáneas, cuestionando cómo habitamos la tierra, a quién pertenece, qué recursos extraemos de ella y cómo afecta todo esto a nuestra alimentación.

Seguido a esta presentación, Hernández se reunirá con el curador y escritor mexicano Esteban King Álvarez y con la investigadora Andrea Reed-Leal, residente de Chicago, para conversar sobre la exposición y el papel de la artista al abordar problemáticas contemporáneas en torno a la soberanía alimentaria, nuestro enfoque en la tecnología y las relaciones culturales con la comida y la tierra en México. Para cerrar el evento, se ofrecerá una recepción patrocinada por el Consulado General de México en Chicago.

Join us at UNAM Chicago as we welcome internationally renowned Mexican artist Magali Lara for a guided walkthrough of her current exhibition De la misma habitación (Of the Same Room) on view in the university gallery.

Curators of this exhibition, Sofía Gabriel, Executive Director of MAKE Lit, and Alivé Piliado, Curatorial Associate of the National Museum of Mexican Art, will accompany the artist as they take us through the origins, meanings, and material processes of the exhibited mixed-media prints, which were commissioned for the commemoration of the 90th anniversary of the Instituto de Investigaciones Estéticas of UNAM.

Born in Mexico City, Magali Lara has been exhibiting her work internationally for almost 50 years. Experimenting across artistic mediums, collaborating with interdisciplinary makers, and bringing a nuanced feminist approach to her practice, she has been recognized as one of the most important artists of her generation.

This event is presented in partnership with UNAM Chicago as part of their exhibition programming for De la misma habitación (Of the Same Room), on view October 23 - December 5, 2025

De la misma habitación: Un recorrido por la exhibición con la artista Magali Lara

Acompáñenos en la UNAM Chicago para recibir a la artista mexicana de renombre internacional Magali Lara en un recorrido guiado por su exposición "De la misma habitación", que se exhibe en la galería del campus.

Las curadoras de la muestra, Sofía Gabriel, directora ejecutiva de MAKE Lit, y Alivé Piliado, curadora asociada del Museo Nacional de Arte Mexicano, acompañarán a la artista en un recorrido explicativo de los orígenes, significados y procesos materiales de las piezas de papel en técnica mixta expuestas, comisionadas por la conmemoración del 90º aniversario del Instituto de Investigaciones Estéticas de la UNAM.

Nacida en la Ciudad de México, Magali Lara lleva alrededor de 50 años exhibiendo su obra de manera internacional. Experimentando con diversos medios artísticos, colaborando con creadores interdisciplinarios y aportando un enfoque feminista con matices a su práctica, ha sido reconocida como una de las artistas más importantes de su generación.

Este evento se presenta en colaboración con la UNAM Chicago como parte de su programa de actividades relacionadas con la muestra “De la misma habitación”, disponible del 23 de octubre al 5 de diciembre de 2025.

Join us at the Logan Center for the Arts for an artist talk with internationally renowned Mexican artist Magali Lara followed by a conversation with art historian Maggie Borowitz, hosted by the Open Practice Committee in the Department of Visual Arts at the University of Chicago.

Born in Mexico City, Magali Lara has been exhibiting her work internationally for almost 50 years. Experimenting across artistic mediums, collaborating with interdisciplinary makers, and bringing a nuanced feminist approach to her practice, she has been recognized as one of the most important artists of her generation. In this lecture, Lara will discuss five central themes–grid, text, landscape, gesture and monster– all of which have remained present in her practice for over five decades. Beginning with her interest in grids for their negative space and capabilities of visually framing stories of the everyday, to her obsession with gardens and images of trees as links between the underground and the heavens, to thinking of monsters as ghosts of what we choose to ignore, Lara will take us through various projects that illustrate these ideas across various scales and presentation formats. For Lara, art is an extraordinary way to read our times, from the personal to the political, from the outside to the inside.

Following the presentation, Lara will be joined by Maggie Borowitz, who is currently at work on a book manuscript entitled Magali Lara: Feminist Artistic Tactics and the Mexican 1980s, for an intimate conversation discussing these central themes.

This event is presented in partnership with the University of Chicago’s Open Practice Committee in the Department of Visual Arts, the Department of Art History, and UNAM Chicago.

De los objetos al paisaje y otras historias: Plática con la artista Magali Lara

Acompáñenos en el Logan Center for the Arts para una charla con la internacionalmente reconocida artista mexicana Magali Lara, seguida de un diálogo con la historiadora de arte Maggie Borowitz; organizada por el Comité de Práctica Abierta del Departamento de Artes Visuales de la Universidad de Chicago.

Nacida en la Ciudad de México, Magali Lara ha expuesto internacionalmente durante los últimos 50 años. Experimentando con diversos medios artísticos, colaborando con creadores interdisciplinarios y aportando un enfoque feminista a su práctica, Magali ha sido reconocida como una de las artistas más importantes de su generación. 

En esta conferencia, Lara abordará cinco temas centrales: redes, textos, paisajes, gestos y monstruosidades; elementos presentes en su obra durante más de cinco décadas. Comenzando por su interés en las redes por sus espacios negativos y su capacidad para enmarcar visualmente historias cotidianas, pasando por su obsesión por los jardines y las imágenes de árboles como vínculos entre el inframundo y el cielo, hasta su visión de los monstruos como fantasmas de aquello que elegimos ignorar; Lara nos guiará a través de diversos proyectos que ilustran estas ideas en diversas escalas y formatos. Para Lara, el arte es una forma extraordinaria de interpretar nuestro tiempo, de lo personal a lo político, desde el exterior hasta lo interno.

Siguiendo a la presentación, Maggie Borowitz se unirá a Lara - quien actualmente está trabajando en el libro Magali Lara: Feminist Artistic Tactics and the Mexican 1980s- con una conversación íntima sobre los temas centrales del libro.
