Join us at the Logan Center for the Arts for an artist talk with internationally renowned Mexican artist Magali Lara followed by a conversation with art historian Maggie Borowitz, hosted by the Open Practice Committee in the Department of Visual Arts at the University of Chicago.

Born in Mexico City, Magali Lara has been exhibiting her work internationally for almost 50 years. Experimenting across artistic mediums, collaborating with interdisciplinary makers, and bringing a nuanced feminist approach to her practice, she has been recognized as one of the most important artists of her generation. In this lecture, Lara will discuss five central themes–grid, text, landscape, gesture and monster– all of which have remained present in her practice for over five decades. Beginning with her interest in grids for their negative space and capabilities of visually framing stories of the everyday, to her obsession with gardens and images of trees as links between the underground and the heavens, to thinking of monsters as ghosts of what we choose to ignore, Lara will take us through various projects that illustrate these ideas across various scales and presentation formats. For Lara, art is an extraordinary way to read our times, from the personal to the political, from the outside to the inside.

Following the presentation, Lara will be joined by Maggie Borowitz, who is currently at work on a book manuscript entitled Magali Lara: Feminist Artistic Tactics and the Mexican 1980s, for an intimate conversation discussing these central themes.

This event is presented in partnership with the University of Chicago’s Open Practice Committee in the Department of Visual Arts, the Department of Art History, and UNAM Chicago.

De los objetos al paisaje y otras historias: Plática con la artista Magali Lara

Acompáñenos en el Logan Center for the Arts para una charla con la internacionalmente reconocida artista mexicana Magali Lara, seguida de un diálogo con la historiadora de arte Maggie Borowitz; organizada por el Comité de Práctica Abierta del Departamento de Artes Visuales de la Universidad de Chicago.

Nacida en la Ciudad de México, Magali Lara ha expuesto internacionalmente durante los últimos 50 años. Experimentando con diversos medios artísticos, colaborando con creadores interdisciplinarios y aportando un enfoque feminista a su práctica, Magali ha sido reconocida como una de las artistas más importantes de su generación. 

En esta conferencia, Lara abordará cinco temas centrales: redes, textos, paisajes, gestos y monstruosidades; elementos presentes en su obra durante más de cinco décadas. Comenzando por su interés en las redes por sus espacios negativos y su capacidad para enmarcar visualmente historias cotidianas, pasando por su obsesión por los jardines y las imágenes de árboles como vínculos entre el inframundo y el cielo, hasta su visión de los monstruos como fantasmas de aquello que elegimos ignorar; Lara nos guiará a través de diversos proyectos que ilustran estas ideas en diversas escalas y formatos. Para Lara, el arte es una forma extraordinaria de interpretar nuestro tiempo, de lo personal a lo político, desde el exterior hasta lo interno.

Siguiendo a la presentación, Maggie Borowitz se unirá a Lara - quien actualmente está trabajando en el libro Magali Lara: Feminist Artistic Tactics and the Mexican 1980s- con una conversación íntima sobre los temas centrales del libro.

Acompañe al Departamento de Español y Portugués de la Universidad Northwestern en una conversación y taller de escritura con la galardonada autora mexicana Gabriela Damián Miravete.

Este evento -en español- girará en torno al interés de la autora por temas como la ciencia ficción, la literatura especulativa y la construcción de mundos. Se establecerán conexiones entre escritores latinxs históricos y contemporáneos, a través de la relación entre temas recurrentes como la magia, la fantasía y los viajes en el tiempo en el boom literario de los años 60 y la obra de escritores contemporáneos como Damián Miravete. La primera mitad de la sesión consistirá en un conversatorio sobre dos cuentos de Damián Miravete titulados  "Espanto del mundo nuevo" y "El taller de enmiendas y reparaciones", moderado por el profesor adjunto de Literatura Mexicana y Latinoamericana, Alfonso Fierro. La conversación seguirá con un ejercicio de escritura creativa de construcción de mundos la cual guiará a los participantes a través de algunos métodos y temas presentes en la obra de la autora.

Geological Writing and World-Building: Conversation and Workshop with Gabriela Damián Miravete

Join Northwestern University’s Department of Spanish and Portuguese for a conversation and writing workshop with Mexico-based award winning author, Gabriela Damián Miravete.

This Spanish-language event will focus on the author’s interest in science-fiction, speculative literature, and world-building. Connections will be made between Latinx writers of the past and present through recurrent topics like magic, fantasy and time travel in the Boom literature of the 1960s and the work of contemporary writers like Damián Miravete. The first half of the session will be a discussion of two of Damián Miravete’s short stories "Espanto del mundo nuevo" and "El taller de enmiendas y reparaciones" moderated by Assistant Professor of Mexican and Latin American Literature, Alfonso Fierro. The conversation will be followed by a creative writing exercise in collective world-building introducing participants to some of the methods and themes in the author’s work through a hands-on activity.

Join us at the University of Chicago for a reading and conversation with one of Mexico’s most exciting poets and artists, Diana Garza Islas, hosted by Translation Studies. 

Based in Monterrey, Garza Islas has published six books of poetry including Black Box Named Like to Me translated by Cal Paule (Ugly Duckling Presse, 2024) and chapbook Probable Synonyms of the Word Sololoy translated by Ian U Lockaby (Carrion Bloom Books, 2025), from which she will read selected poems. 

Following a live reading of these visual and sonic texts, Garza Islas will discuss her interest in the process of language acquisition, as well as the process of translation, both from one language to another as well as from a visual experience to a literary description. To end the event, the author will invite the audience to participate in a brief translation exercise.

Adquisición del lenguaje y écfrasis: lectura y conversatorio con Diana Garza Islas

Acompáñenos en la Universidad de Chicago para una lectura y conversatorio con una de las poetas y artistas más interesantes de México, Diana Garza Islas. 

Establecida en Monterrey, Garza Islas ha publicado seis libros de poesía, entre ellos Black Box Named Like to Me, traducido por Cal Paule (Ugly Duckling Presse, 2024) y el librito Probable Synonyms of the Word Sololoy, traducido por Ian U Lockaby (Carrion Bloom Books, 2025), de los cuales leerá una selección de poemas

Después de la lectura en vivo de estos textos visuales y sonoros, Garza Islas hablará sobre su interés en el proceso de adquisición del lenguaje, así como en el proceso de traducción, tanto de un idioma a otro como de una experiencia visual a una descripción literaria. Para terminar el evento, la autora invitara al público a participar en un breve ejercicio de traducción.
