REENCOUNTERS/REENCUENTROS exhibition
Exhibition at the Chicago Art Department, 1926 S Halsted St, Chicago, IL 60608, October 13th-29th
On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the Lit & Luz Festival, we bring together work by 14 artists and past Collaboration Cohort participants for this reunion exhibition—celebrating a decade of collaboration, discovery, artistic innovation, and critical expression. If the first encounter is serendipitous, a reencounter is almost destined. In this exhibition, each artist brings a recent work, revisits an old creation, or materializes a new iteration of a series.
REENCOUNTERS/REENCUENTROS offers glimpses into the artists’ most up-to-date interests, their ongoing research, and their continued inquiries into socio-political and environmental issues, human conditions, kinship, and most prominently, the power and complexities of language in all its shapes and forms. In the spirit of the festival, we also commissioned past participant writers to produce a creative response to an artwork on view in the exhibition. And thus new encounters begin.

Meet the curatorial team and participating artists for an ongoing tour of the show that celebrates the 10th anniversary of the Lit & Luz Festival.
Tuesday, October 17th, 6:30 p.m. doors / 7:00 p.m.-9:00 pm.
At this evening screening, past Lit & Luz Collaboration Cohort participants, including Aura Arreola, Susy Bielak + Fred Schmalz, Galia Eibenschutz, Amanda Gutiérrez, Dalia Huerta Cano, and Selina Trepp present a series of moving-image pieces and audiovisual experimental works.
Wednesday, October 18th, 7:00 p.m.
In this panel discussion, participants from previous editions of the Lit & Luz Festival reflect on the significance of collaborations and the challenge of carrying them out. They also explore the lessons learned and difficulties faced when working with someone from a different discipline, at a distance, and in a different language. With Kirsten Leenaars, Laleh Motlagh, and Gabriel Ojeda-Sagué. Moderated by Daniel Monroy Cuevas.

Con motivo del décimo aniversario del Lit & Luz Festival, esta muestra reúne una selección de obras de 14 artistas que participaron con anterioridad en el Grupo de Colaboración del festival. La exhibición, concebida a la manera de una reunión, celebra una década de colaboraciones, descubrimiento, innovación artística y expresión crítica. Si el primer encuentro es fortuito, un reencuentro está casi destinado. En esta exposición, cada artista presenta una obra reciente, revisita una antigua creación o materializa la nueva versión de una serie.
REENCOUNTERS/REENCUENTROS ofrece destellos de los intereses más recientes de lxs artistas, sus propias investigaciones en curso y sus continuas indagaciones sobre cuestiones sociopolíticas y ambientales, las condiciones humanas, el parentesco y, lo más destacado, el poder y las complejidades del lenguaje en todos los ámbitos y formas. Retomando el espíritu del festival, también fueron comisionados una serie de textos — escritos por diversxs autorxs que participaron con anterioridad en el festival— que responden de manera creativa a cada una de las obras expuestas. Comenzando así nuevos encuentros.
