The Lit & Luz Festival Goes Virtual with “Remix: Respond and Rebuild”

CHICAGO—MAKE Literary Productions is proud to present the seventh annual Lit & Luz Festival of Language, Literature, and Art October 3-9 as a series of virtual programs. The only US cultural festival to feature Mexican writers, Lit & Luz fosters the creation of new art through international collaboration and essential dialogues between residents of Mexico and the United States. Through conversations and the creation of new art, writers, artists, and musicians participating in “Remix: Respond and Rebuild” will reconsider past festival themes, while also responding to issues and events currently impacting the US and Mexico.

This year’s festival welcomes back Lit & Luz all stars including authors

Julián Herbert (MX) (The Pain in the House of Others)
Eula Biss (US) (Having and Being Had)
José Olivarez (US) (Citizen Illegal) and keynote speaker,
Cristina Rivera Garza (MX/US), two-time recipient of the Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz Prize and author of the forthcoming, Autobiography of Cotton.
Featured visual artists include Tania Candiani (MX), Dalia Huerta Cano (MX), Selina Trepp (US), Caroline Kent (US), and Sebastián Hidalgo (US).

Though the pandemic has prevented participant travel from Mexico to Chicago, the virtual events bring audiences from both countries together to watch and to comment on programs. Technology available online allows Lit & Luz to include more simultaneous audio translation and closed captioning, making almost all of the dozen events bilingual. This year, Lit & Luz presenting partners include institutions in both Chicago and Mexico City: Museo Universitario del Chopo (MX), DoVA at University of Chicago, Northwestern University’s Department of Spanish and Portuguese, and many more.

Programs this year include an audio documentary on artist activists; a live poetry reading with participants in both Chicago and in Mexico City; “studio visits”; and, of course, Lit & Luz’s signature event, the Live Magazine Show. This year’s Live Show, taking place on Friday, October 9th will feature award-winning poets José Olivarez and Jimena González as live hosts with video and audio collaborations with nearly two dozen participants including Kirsten Leenaars (US), Daniel Saldaña París (MX) (Ramifications—forthcoming), and Susannah Bielak (US).

All programs are streamed to litluz.org from MAKE’s YouTube channel—where audiences can interact with each other and participants via the live chat.

El Festival Lit & Luz se vuelve virtual con "Remix: Respond and Rebuild"

CHICAGO — MAKE Literary Productions se enorgullece en presentar el séptimo Festival anual de lenguaje, literatura y arte Lit & Luz del 3 al 9 de octubre como una serie de programas virtuales. Siendo el único festival cultural estadounidense que presenta a escritores mexicanos, Lit & Luz fomenta la creación de arte nuevo a través de la colaboración internacional y de diálogos esenciales entre los residentes de México y Estados Unidos. A través de conversaciones y la creación de arte, los escritores, artistas, y músicos de “Remix: Respond and Rebuild” reconsiderarán temas de ediciones pasadas del festival, y al mismo tiempo responderán a problemas y eventos que actualmente impactan a Estados Unidos y México.
