Chicago—the 12th annual Lit & Luz Festival of Language, Literature, and Art—as featured in, WBEZ’s Reset with Sasha-Ann Simons, Chicago Review of Books, Block Club Chicago, and more—takes place November 8 to November 14, 2025. This one-of-a-kind cross-cultural, bilingual festival brings together writers, poets, and visual artists from Mexico and Chicago for a week-long series of public programming at venues throughout Chicago. 

Audiences can expect free, bilingual programs: author conversations; artist talks; poetry readings; live storytelling; music; and much more in venues across eight Chicago neighborhoods. We’re excited to announce two new Lit & Luz partners, the Hyde Park Art Center—host of a month-long artist residency with Ana Hernández and the National Museum of Mexican Art—book club and visual artist program host. We’re also thrilled to bring our signature program, the Live Magazine Show back to the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago! How do we see the role of the arts and literature in addressing broken aspects of our communities, society, and planet? This year’s festival––under the theme of “Repair/Reparar”–– seeks to inquire how writers, poets, and artists from Chicago and Mexico critically look at their surrounding realities in need of repair. Through artistic creation and collaboration, Lit & Luz Chicago will explore and promote the many ways creative acts can make an impact and offer new perspectives on what it takes to face and reimagine our shared realities.

This year’s Collaboration Cohort—a group of eight of the most innovative contemporary artists from Mexico and the US curated by Co-Artistic Directors, Esteban King (CDMX) and Zespo (Chicago)—includes internationally-renowned, Cuernavaca-based artist Magali Lara, whose 2025 solo-exhibition Magali Lara. Cinco décadas en espiral was presented with MUAC, Mexico this spring; Mexico City-based science fiction author, and James Tiptree, Jr. Awardee, Gabriela Damián Miravete; Chicago-based artist Maria Gaspar whose multi-disciplinary sculpture, sound, performance and installation work has received the Guggenheim Award for Creative Arts and the Latinx Artist Fellowship; and Chicago-based scholar and author Margarita Saona whose work considers memory, the body, phenomenology and the senses with a recent memoir, Corazón en trance: Bitácora de una sobreviviente (Lima, Peru PEISA, 2024); and more. Participants are paired up with another cohort member to create multimedia, collaborative pieces which debut at the festival’s signature event—the Lit & Luz Live Magazine Show, presented in partnership with the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago on Friday, November 14 at the Edlis Neeson Theater. 

The annual festival has two iterations, beginning in the fall in Chicago and reconvening the following spring in Mexico City. Now in its twelfth year, the Lit & Luz Festival brings international artists to Chicago, introduces local audiences to creative practitioners south of the border, facilitates community-based conversations about pressing issues through numerous events around the city, and supports artists by commissioning new work, presenting it to new audiences, and helping to grow their networks in the US and Mexico. Lit & Luz is produced by the literary arts nonprofit, MAKE Literary Productions, with support from partners and sponsors including the Driehaus Foundation, Gaylord and Dorothy Donnelley Foundation, UIC's Center for Latinx Literature of the Americas, The Mexican Consulate in Chicago, and more. It’s a not-to-miss cultural event, with past participants including luminaries such as Yvette Mayorga, Edra Soto, Krista Franklin, Cristina Rivera Garza, Valeria Luiselli, José Olivarez, Jac Jemc, and Erika L. Sánchez.

Chicago, la 12.ª edición del Festival Anual de la Lengua, Literatura y Arte, Lit & Luz, como lo reseñó en WBEZ´s Reset Sasha-Ann Simons, o bien en el Chicago Review of Books, Block Club Chicago y más, se celebrará del 8 al 14 de noviembre de 2025. Este festival bilingüe e intercultural, único en su tipo, reúne a escritores, poetas y artistas visuales de México y Chicago, durante una semana de eventos públicos en diferentes espacios de la ciudad. El público podrá disfrutar de programas bilingües gratuitos: charlas con autores y artistas, lecturas de poesía, narraciones en vivo, música y mucho más, albergados en ocho barrios de Chicago.

¿Cómo vemos el papel de las artes y la literatura en relación con los aspectos deteriorados de nuestras comunidades, sociedad y planeta? El festival de este año, bajo el lema "Repair/Reparar", busca indagar la manera en la que escritores, poetas y artistas de Chicago y México analizan críticamente las realidades que los rodean y que necesitan ser reparadas. A través de la creación artística y la colaboración, Lit & Luz Chicago explorará y promoverá las diversas formas en que las creaciones artísticas pueden impactar y ofrecer nuevas perspectivas sobre lo necesario para afrontar y reimaginar nuestras realidades compartidas.

El grupo de colaboradores de este año —ocho de los artistas contemporáneos más innovadores de México y Estados Unidos curado por los codirectores artísticos Esteban King (CDMX) y Zespo (Chicago), incluye a la artista internacional Magali Lara, quien vive y trabaja en Cuernavaca, Morelos; cuya exposición individual de 2025 “Magali Lara. Cinco décadas en espiral” fue presentada en la primavera de este año en el MUAC, México; también contamos con la participación de la autora de ciencia ficción y ganadora del premio James Tiptree, Jr., radicada en la Ciudad de México, Gabriela Damián Miravete; la artista establecida en Chicago Maria Gaspar, cuya práctica multidisciplinaria, la cual incluye escultura, sonido, performance e instalación, ha sido merecedora del premio Guggenheim de Artes Creativas y la Beca para Artistas Latinx; así como la académica y autora arraigada en Chicago Margarita Saona, cuyo trabajo más reciente, llamado Corazón en trance: Bitácora de una sobreviviente (Lima, Perú PEISA, 2024) toma en cuenta la memoria, el cuerpo, la fenomenología y los sentidos en forma de poemario; por mencionar solo algunos colaboradores. Los participantes se unirán a otro miembro del grupo para crear piezas colaborativas multimedia que serán estrenadas en el evento principal del festival: el Lit & Luz Magazine Show, presentado en colaboración con el Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Chicago, el viernes 14 de noviembre en el Teatro Edlis Neeson.

El festival anual tiene dos versiones: comienza en otoño, en Chicago, y se reanuda en la primavera siguiente, en la Ciudad de México. En su duodécima edición, el Festival Lit & Luz invitará artistas internacionales a Chicago, y conectará a la comunidad artística local con profesionales creativos provenientes del sur de la frontera, propiciando así conversaciones colectivas sobre temas críticos a través de numerosos eventos llevados a cabo en la ciudad y apoyando así a los artistas involucrados mediante la comisión de obras inéditas, para luego presentarlas a nuevos públicos y ampliar sus redes tanto en Estados Unidos como en México. 

Lit & Luz es producida por MAKE Literary Productions, organización sin fines de lucro dedicada a las artes literarias, la cual cuenta con el apoyo de importantes socios y patrocinadores, entre ellos: la Fundación Driehaus, la Fundación Gaylord y Dorothy Donnelley, así como el Centro de Literatura Latinx de las Américas de la UIC y el Consulado de México en Chicago, entre otros. Es un evento cultural imperdible que ha contado en el pasado con la participación de figuras como Yvette Mayorga, Edra Soto, Krista Franklin, Cristina Rivera Garza, Valeria Luiselli, José Olivarez, Jac Jemc y Erika L.
