¿Cuál es la prueba más antigua de una sociedad civilizada?, dicen que el estudiante preguntó a Margaret Mead.

Dicen que ella respondió que un fémur roto que había sanado, que había sido reparado por el cuidado de otra persona: “La civilización comienza cuando ayudamos a alguien a superar una dificultad”, dicen que dijo.

But it turns out that perhaps Margaret Mead didn't say that.

There is no evidence, neither of the healthy bone, nor of the text where she would have said what she said.

And it turns out that it's not just humans who repair broken bones.

It turns out that primates, elephants, wolves, whales, help others overcome difficulties.

Creemos que estas son buenas noticias.

Porque esto implica que la civilización, esa que hoy vemos derrumbarse de institución en institución, de redada en redada, en realidad es incivilizada.

Implica que somos, después de todo, animales.

Y que hemos hecho más daño negándolo que aceptándolo.

What would happen if we accepted that we are animals, like everyone else?

That we are capable of annihilating others, but also of licking our wounds?

Of helping each other overcome difficulties,

Of mending bones that aren't our own?

Resulta que hace miles de años, uno de los perros de una manada sufrió una enfermedad.

La manada vivía con un grupo de humanos. Unos y otros se ayudaban a sobrevivir.

Ni la manada abandonó al perro, ni los humanos lo ignoraron.

El perro fue cuidado y sanó y vivió muchos años, hasta que volvió a enfermar y murió.

The humans grew old and died too, and

Someone dug their graves and buried them together.

Of this other fact, there is evidence. Plenty of it. From 15,000 years ago, 10,000, 3,000, yesterday.

But perhaps the evidence isn't what's important, but the stories we tell ourselves around the evidence or in the absence of it.

¿Quiénes queremos ser? 

Will we leave behind the exception that isolated us from the brotherhood of the world?

Will we be the animals who speak, saying, "We are animals, we are like you, brother wolf, sister whale, and we will help each other through difficulties"?
