Valerie Mejer Caso

Painter and poet Valerie Mejer Caso was born in Mexico City into a family of European immigrants. She is the author of the poetry collections Edinburgh Notebook (2021), translated by Michelle Gil-Montero, Rain of the Future (2013), translated by C.D. Wright, Forrest Gander, and Alexandra Zelman; de la ola, el atajo (2009); Geografías de Niebla (2008); Esta Novela Azul (2004), which was translated by Michelle Gil-Montero as This Blue Novel (2015); and Ante el Ojo de Cíclope (1999). Her book De Elefante a Elefante (1997) won the Spanish Government’s “Gerardo Diego 1966” International Award. Mejer Caso has collaborated with photographers, among them Barry Shapiro and Russel Monk. With the photographer D.S Borris, Mejer Caso and Forrest Gander co-authored Time’s Playing Fields, a book about empty football fields in Mexico (Blue Star Contemporary Art Center, TX). She has translated poetry by Charles Wright, Ruth Fainligth, and Pascale Petit. From 2016-17, she participated in the Bienalle of Kochi-Muziris in India, where she exhibited her unfolded book “Untamable Light.” Her poetry has been translated into English, Slovenian, and Korean.

Valerie Mejer Caso es pintora y poeta. Hija de inmigrantes europeos, nació en la Ciudad de México. Es autora de los libros Edinburgh Notebook (2021), traducido al inglés por Michelle Gil-Montero, Rain of the Future (2013) traducido por C.D. Wright, Forrest Gander y Alexandra Zelman; de la ola, el atajo (2009); Geografías de Niebla (2008); Esta Novela Azul (2004), traducida por Michelle Gil-Montero como This Blue Novel (2015) y Ante el Ojo de Cíclope (1999). Su libro De Elefante a Elefante (1997) ganó el premio internacional Gerardo Diego 1966 del gobierno español. Mejer Caso ha colaborado con fotógrafos como Barry Shapiro y Russel Monk. Con el fotógrafo D.S Borris, Mejer Caso y Forrest Gander fueron co autores de Time’s Playing Fields, un libro sobre campos de fútbol vacíos en México (Blue Star Contemporary Art Center, TX). Ha traducido poesía de Charles Wright, Ruth Fainligth, y Pascale Petit. Del 2016 al 2017 participó en la Bienal de Kochi-Muziris en la India, donde presentó su libro “Untamable Light”. Su poesía ha sido traducida al inglés, al esloveno y al coreano.

We're excited to welcome back Lit & Luz 2024-15 Collaboration Cohort member Valerie Mejer Caso as our 2023-24 Writer in Residence.

In partnership with Poetry Foundation, Valerie will work on her craft at the Foundation's library. With the support of librarian Katherine Litwin, Valerie will also have access to the many texts available in this expansive non-lending library featuring not just collections of poetry, but broadsides, artistic collaborations, and more.

At the Lit & Luz Live Show on Saturday, October 21st at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, Valerie will open the program with a commemorative poem completed during her residency.

This expanded residency program was created to provide authors from Mexico a greater opportunity to engage not only with the literary resources in Chicago, but with the city itself.

En colaboración con la Poetry Foundation, Valerie trabajará en su arte en la biblioteca de la Fundación.
