Pergentino José

Pergentino José was born in Buena Vista Loxicha, Oaxaca in 1981. He studied Education at the Escuela Normal Bilingüe y Intercultural de Oaxaca (2001 - 2005) and received a Masters in Modern Latin American Literature from the Universidad Austral de Chile in Valdivia, Chile (2011-2013). He wrote Y supe qué responder, Nyak mbkaabna (SEP, 2006), published in a bilingual edition in both Spanish and Zapotec. In 2012 he published a collection of short stories entitled Hormigas rojas (Almadía, 2012) and in 2014 he published Ndio dis mbind, Lenguaje de pájaros, Language of Birds (Editorial Avispero, 2014), a trilingual collection of poems written in Zapotec, Spanish, and English. His work has been included in the book México 20 (Pushkin Press-CONACULTA, 2015) and México 20 New Voices Old Traditions (Pushkin Press, 2015), an anthology of 20 Mexican writers under 40 who best represent Mexican literature. Excerpts of his work have been published in the poetry anthology from the Centro de las Artes de Oaxaca 2011-2015 (Editorial Calamus 2016), and the poetry anthology of Mexican languages Lenguas Madre (Secretaria de Cultura, 2019). The English translation of his book Hormigas rojas was published in 2020 under the title Red Ants, translated by Thomas Bunstead (Deep Vellum, 2020). He has been a member of the Sistema Nacional de Creadores de Arte edition 2017 in the category of indigenous languages.

Pergentino José nació en 1981 en Buena Vista Loxicha, Oaxaca. Estudió Educación en la Escuela Normal Bilingüe e Intercultural de Oaxaca (2001-2005) y Maestría en Literatura Hispanoamericana Contemporánea por la Universidad Austral de Chile en Valdivia, Chile (2011-2013). Es autor de Y supe qué responder, Nyak mbkaabna (SEP, 2006) en versión bilingüe zapoteco-español. En 2012 publicó el libro de cuentos Hormigas rojas (Editorial Almadía) y en 2014 el poemario Ndio dis mbind, Lenguaje de pájaros, The Language of Birds, en edición trilingüe, zapoteco, español e inglés (Editorial Avispero, 2014). Su obra narrativa ha sido incluida en el libro México 20, (Pushkin Press-CONACULTA, 2015) y México 20 New Voices Old Traditions (Pushkin Press, 2015) antología de los 20 escritores mexicanos menores de 40 años representativos de la literatura mexicana. Parte de su obra ha sido publicada en la antología de poesía del Centro de las Artes de Oaxaca 2011-2015 (Editorial Calamus 2016) y la antología poética en lenguas mexicanas Lenguas Madre, (Secretaria de Cultura, 2019). En el 2020 salió la traducción al inglés del libro de cuentos Hormigas rojas, Red Ants, trans Thomas Bunstead (Deep Vellum, 2020). Ha sido miembro del Sistema Nacional de Creadores de Arte emisión 2017 en la categoría de letras en lenguas indígenas.
