Julietta Cheung

Julietta Cheung is an artist with a text-based and language-inspired practice. Her work draws from her experience as a second language user and her background in design. Through textual appropriations, typographic experimentations, reading performances, and sculptural works, Cheung unmakes and remakes the terms and objects of contemporary American culture to examine their collective fabulations. Her work has been published, performed, and exhibited in various venues across the United States. These include Kenning Editions, tripwire: a journal of poetics, Creative Capital's On Our Radar!, the Poetry Foundation, the Chicago Cultural Center, the Chicago Artists Coalition, and many other independent venues across the U.S. This fall, Cheung will unveil a new work in the streets of Chicago, courtesy of the Roman Susan Art Foundation in partnership with the Chicago Architecture Biennial. Prior to her current role as an assistant professor in Contemporary Practices at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Cheung taught text-based art at Florida State University. She earned her MFA in Studio Art from SAIC as a recipient of the Art Institute of Chicago Trustees Merit Scholarship.
